The PS2 Classics banner was re-released in 2012 as a downloadable game on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 under iOS, Android, and in April 2016 for the PlayStation 4 as the PS2 Emulated Downloadable Game for the PlayStation Store.

Theme of the game – Max Payne 1

A designer named “Walkir” has game centers on former NYPD police detective Max Payne, who tried to solve the mysterious murders of his wife and daughter in a drug trafficking case, and while doing so, is embroiled in a big and complicated conspiracy, the US military.

It has a sandy neo-noir style and uses graphic novel panels instead of animated cut scenes to illustrate the game, as it is inspired by the hard-boiled detective novels of writers like Mickey Spillen. There are many references to Norse mythology in this game, especially the legend of Ragnarok, and many of the names used in the game are names of Norse deities and myths.

Gameplay was heavily influenced by the Hong Kong action film genre, especially as director John Woo, and The Matrix was one of the first games to feature the popular Bullet Time Effect.

Gameplay – Max Payne 1

Almost all gameplay includes bullet time-based gun-fights. Levels are usually straightforward, occasionally combining platform and puzzle-solving elements. Following Max’s internal monologue, the player’s storyline comes to the fore, as the character determines what his next steps are. Many levels of the game involve Payne’s surreal nightmares and drug-related hallucinations.

Initially, the player’s weapon was a semi-automatic pistol. As the game progresses, other weapons become available, including melee and hand-thrown weapons. Some weapons have dual capabilities. Max regains health by taking painkillers, which appear throughout the scale. The AI of the game is based on pre-scripted commands, most of the behavior that enemy’s exhibit is pre-scripted.

Max Payne’s gameplay revolves around bullet time, which is a form of slow-motion when induced, slows down over time so that the naked eye can see the bullets’ movements and allow Max to make special movements. Even if Payne’s movement is slowed down, the player can still keep the target reticulum and respond in real time, providing an advantage over enemies. Occasionally, when the last character of the enemy group is killed, the perspective shifts to a third-person view circling the falling body. Similarly, the camera can follow the path of the bullet fired from the sniper rifle.
